E3 has been one of the biggest game show events since 1995 and they are for the first time not having the show this year. Times have changed drastically in the past 5 years how games are played and presented, and it shows. Summer Game Fest 2020 is going to replace the show this year. It is a 4-month long video game news celebration that will feature upcoming, new and playable games. They are pushing for an industry worldwide celebration of video games. From the front page of Summer Game Fest; “Bringing the world together to celebrate video game from the comfort of home. Summer game fest is a season of digital video game events from publishers, select playable content, in game event and more to be announced!”

For people that have been attending E3 for years this will come with a response of mixed emotions, but one thing can be determined for sure, that they are going for a very different approach on game news. Not only are they spanning the event over a few months, but they are focusing on digital type of event system with varying in game events to get communities involved. It is surely a new and interesting approach that could potentially get a lot more people involved but at the same time it is negating a core element of E3, the person to person interaction. This could still be possible at different times, but word has not been specified yet if that will be possible, especially because of large gathering of people not being favorable due to COVID-19.

Overall, this could be a good change for the community, seemingly to outreach to a lot more people and trying to gain a type of unification worldwide is a convincing model for many. Additionally, all the main publishers and typical participants are on board like PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and Microsoft will even have its specialty own events for the Summer Game Fest. Overall, this could be an amazing addition to the community and can bring a huge sense of unification in a crazy time in our world.
